I think, after 4 versions of PhotoLab, that is highly unlikely. The UI has evolved considerably since DOP, but, at the same time, it really isn’t that much different.
I agree. I jumped in at DOP 8 (IIRC), and have been using every version since then. The UI is generally really good and comfortable - there only are a few quirks that should be corrected resp. improved for better usability.
Finally, I agree with you. To my eyes this is mainly the grey color of the characters which is difficult to discern, when a sub-palette is deactivated. Perhaps due to my senior age!

I’m not sure that “your age” is the culprit here.
The gray color used for the inactive palettes is a bit too light and lacks enough contrast with the background. Definitely something that needs to be improved.
