HEIC/HIEF-Support

Maybe I missed it, but: are there any plans yet to support HEIC/HEIF Images?

iPhones do this nowadays…

Hello @losty,

I guess either @wolf or @Marie-Catherine can reply to this question.

Regards,
Svetlana G.

Hello,

we are currently working on tasks to support HEIC/HEIF.
It might no be added to next minor release of PL 2 but the one just after.

Cool! Thanks for the info…

Thank you for sharing article and information. this is very helpful for beginner.

Any update on the support @Marie ?
Is it going well or taking more time ?

I just received a bunch of file from a friend but can’t edit them directly, guess I have to wait a bit

Hello,

support of HEIC is on its way, it should be released with version of October/November.

Marie

Merci @Marie for the update.

will it support exporting heic file, or only support opening?

I would like to know, but even just open would be a god send

I too would like if DPL will support exporting to HEIF especially with the HEVC Codec that Apple is using in the newer iOS devices. Not only is it 50% more space efficient in compare to JPEG, it also allows to encode pictures with 16 bit depth instead of 8 bit depth in JPEGs. Plus the HEIF container allows to embed multiple pictures (probably HEVC + RAW ?), Alpha Channels (for masks etc.) and Metadata like XMP (probably as well as proprietary formats like dop ?).
So maybe it could become a universal all in one container instead of having multiple files for one picture as we have now (RAW, JPEG, DOP, XMP etc.)

Hi,

is this feature still on track for October/November release? I get more and more HEIF pictures that I can’t handle in PL.

Kai

Hi Marie, any update regarding the above? Was actually expecting this to be part of PL3. So were several people on Dpreview. JPEG is really outdated in my opinion, and TIFF is too large. :frowning:

Hello @Robertjan88,

we had to put HEIC support on pause in order to finish tasks for PhotoLab 3.0 release but we will resume our work to have it available as soon as possible.

Marie

@Marie Awesome! Thanks!

Will this still be something for this calendar year, or at least before PL4?

Of course, I understand it will be hard to go into detail regarding your future roadmap, however an estimate would be highly appreciated.

Hello @Robertjan88,

it will be before PL4, don’ worry about that.

Marie

Thanks!!!

The same things were said during PL2 launch about many features some of which are not even in PL3. I only believe it when I see this time Marie.

Just to illustrate with your own words:

See the pattern here? Please do not promise things if they are apparently far from done. This is one of my main annoyances with DxO… stuff is promised all the time but rarely delivered.

Well, anyone who has worked in any industry on projects knows that the project team will invariably run into unexpected “stuff” along the way. If the project has finite resources and firm mileposts or deadlines to meet they will have to adjust priorities and choose what to do now and what to postpone to a later date. Those outside the action rarely have an appreciation for what is really going on behind the curtain!

I am impressed by PhotoLab (especially PL3) and the courtesy and patience of DxO’s staff in the midst of this storm. Well done… keep on keepin’ on!
