Embedding GPS data and keyword tags into your RAW files

Hi All,

I’m still using a VERY out of data method of embedding my GPS data and keyword tags into my RAW files. I’d really prefer to do that as opposed to using sidecar files.

Nikon shooters may remember Nikon ViewNX2. Well, it still works - but really POORLY. I’d love to replace it with something up to date.

Any suggestions? I’m on a Mac. Cheap or free would be ideal, but I don’t mind paying a reasonable amount.

In my personal view there is none better for keywords than Lightroom Classic. For this purpose, you can use it for free (with a free Adobe account). Others here will add their suggestions for their favourites. If your needs are not complex most will do a great job. If your needs are complex, then be sure to test whichever products you are considering. (I cannot imagine, however, any need that could not be met by Lightroom Classic — it has a powerful hierarchy, synonyms, and non-exporting keywords, and entry can be very fast with intelligent auto-complete.)

For GPS data, if you pay for Lightroom, it will do that too. Otherwise, I have used an app called HoudahGeo. It’s a bit odd, interface-wise, but it gets the job done. Both can do manual or track-based positioning.

Thanks for the note but I think Lightroom Classic is sold by subscription. Plus, I don’t think it embeds into the raw file. It uses a database, if I remember correctly.

You are correct, however it is possible to use just the Library module without paying Adobe a cent. I did this for a couple of years.

Regarding writing to the original files, it certainly will write keywords into DNG files, as that is exactly how I use it. For camera-specific RAW I cannot comment, as I shoot direct to DNG on Pentax.

Ok, downloaded the newest version of NX Studio, changed a few RAWs, ran PhotoLab, re-read the metadata, no dice. It appears that PhotoLab can’t see those keywords created from NX Studio… Bummer. Will start a new thread on the “potential” bug…

After using for long time View NX/NX2 to write metadata directly into the NEF files, I was disappointed to see that NX Studio was writing them in an external file not compatible with “standard” xmp files, and so not usable outside NX Studio…

You can change settings in NX Studio and have them write metadata into the NEF.
Unfortunately PL do not read them anyway it appears.

Nikon NX Studio has a switch in the Preferences that allows you to write metadata either in its own format of sidecar file or in its own section in the NEF file.

The Nikon metadata section is made up of their own tags, which do not form part of the normal XMP namespace and, therefore are not visible in any other software apart from tools like ExifTool.

I am in the process of writing my own software for Mac which does allow the writing of keywords, descriptions, ratings and Finder Tags directly in RAW files.

PL will read XMP, IPTC, etc compliant metadata from RAW files but it will only write any changes you might make in PL to an XMP file because DxO are paranoid about damaging RAW files, despite the fact that many other apps have been doing so for years without any corruption.

None of these tags are readable in most “normal” software.

If you are a Nikon user, have you considered using SnapBridge to embed GPS data? I use it all the time. SnapBridge connects my Z6 to my (Android) phone, which transmits GPS data to it for every file. The camera also transmits a version of each photo to the phone for easy viewing. In my view, SnapBridge is a superb product.

Yes - I’ve used SnapBridge - and it works well, but my need is to copy the same GPS data to a huge group of photos. The location is all in the same place - a venue where I shot a show. So, I don’t need something that tracks my location since it’s just the same location all night…
