DeepPRIME GPU requirements - key features for GPUs to be supported

I understand that for DeepPRIME the recommended Nvidia GPU is a GTX 1060. Does this automatically mean that every lesser card will not be supported? Or is this a recommendation for good performance mainly. If so, which features (# of cuda cores, etc) are needed so that a graphics cards will be supported?
